About South B

South B is proper apartment territory - mostly mid-rise blocks with good security and parking. You're looking at 27k for a one-bedroom, 40k for two. Most buildings have guards and CCTV, which matters here. It's convenient - 15 minutes to CBD when traffic's light, but that's rarely. Matatus run constantly along Mombasa Road. Tuesday evenings are quiet, people heading home from work. Weekends get livelier with families visiting the few local spots. You'll do most shopping elsewhere though - limited restaurants and entertainment right here. The trade-off is location without CBD prices. Good for people who want security and don't mind apartment living. Frustrating if you want nightlife or variety at your doorstep. Most residents commute out for work and fun.

The vibe

Residential and practical. Lots of working professionals, small families in apartments. Quiet weekdays, busier weekends. Not much street life - people come home and stay in.

Best for

Working professionals who prioritize location and security over space. People who don't mind apartment living and want easy access to CBD and Airport Road without paying Kilimani prices.

History

South B is one of Nairobi’s well-known residential estates, with roots in early city planning during the colonial era. The name itself is quite literal—“South” refers to its location just below the Central Business District (CBD), while “B” was simply used to label and organize different zones, alongside nearby areas like South C. The estate began to take shape more prominently in the 1980s, as Nairobi expanded and demand for middle-class housing grew. Initially, South B was planned as a low-rise residential area during the colonial era to serve the industrial area, but as more professionals looked for homes close to the city center, the neighborhood quickly evolved. Over time, apartment blocks replaced many of the original houses to accommodate the rising demand. This transformation accelerated in the 2000s and 2010s, when developers built more modern complexes to provide affordable housing near town. Today, South B’s appeal largely comes from its strategic location—positioned between the CBD and Nairobi’s industrial area—making it a convenient and practical choice for people who work in and around the city.
